People aren’t underwhelmed by Avengers: Doomsday because the cast is weak. They’re underwhelmed because this whole thing feels like it came out of nowhere — and that’s the actual problem.

I’m not saying I have an issue with it. I don’t. I’m pumped. I’ll be there opening weekend, front row. But the MCU built its entire brand on the buildup. Infinity War and Endgame didn’t just show up — you had ten years of setup behind them. Every post-credits scene, every Infinity Stone, every “we’re in the endgame now” line was pointed at that moment. You felt the weight of it before you ever sat down in the theater.

Phase 4-6 Never Landed The Runway

Marvel tried to replicate that with Phases 4 through 6 and it just didn’t work. No consistent threat, no connective tissue that actually paid off, no sense that everything was steering toward one collision. So now here comes Doomsday — a movie stacked with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, half the Thunderbolts roster — and it still doesn’t carry that “ten years led to this” feeling. The concept art alone from Infinity War radiated a decade of culmination. This doesn’t have that yet, and it’s not for lack of trying — Marvel’s been teasing this thing since 2024.

That disconnect is exactly why the reaction online has been so muted compared to how insane the cast actually is:

I do understand why people are kind of timid looking at this, which is weird because it’s so — I mean, it’s stacked.

That’s the whole tension in one line. The ingredients are there. The connective tissue isn’t — at least not yet.

What This Means Going In

None of this means the movie will actually be bad. It means Marvel is asking audiences to trust the payoff instead of feeling it build in real time, which is a much harder sell after Phases 4 through 6 already burned some of that trust. The film hits theaters December 18, and there’s still time for a trailer to change the temperature completely. But right now, the hype is running behind the cast list — and that gap is the story heading into release.
